During the Inba eco run, we saw lots of little farm houses. Am privilege to have a grower runner in my group. She explained that those are mini home farms.
The layout of their plot is rather interesting. Usually one side is their house compound while the other side is their farm plot. In this picture above, the right side is their house while the left is for growing and shed for storage.
Zoom in on the left.
The clear plastic polytunnel on the left is for growing delicate crops. Those hardy crops can be grown without cover at the far left. The shed with the black shade cloth is for storage. Agriculture growing needs space for tools, fertiliser, soil, walk paths and other stuff. Typically, 30 to 35% of the space will be used up for such functions.
Like in all developed countries, most youngsters left their hometown to pursue better jobs in the bigger cities. Technology/white collared jobs fetch better pay and are seen as more prestigious.
Most farm houses are tended by the seniors. They grow food for own consumption and sell the balance to willing patrons. We saw them setting up make shift small kiosk just beside their plots during that weekend run.
It is mid spring during our visit ( late April). Hence, we saw lots of crops like canola flowers, Snap and snow Peas as well as leek. At some plots, we do see some winter crops like left over cabbages and aged broccoli.
